This is a cancelled check written by Winfield Scott Edgerly of the 7th Cavalry, dated 1903. Winfield Scott Edgerly, named after a Revolutionary War colonel and a graduate of West Point in 1870, was promoted to 1st Lt. the day before the Battle of The Little Big Horn making him second in command of Company D. Edgerly would survive the battle by joining Benteen's command. As 1st Lieutenant his duties included regimental quartermaster. One can only imagine what he witnessed on July 27 to discover Custer's wasted regiment. He went on as Commander of Company G 7th Cavalry to fight the Battle/Massacre of Wounded Knee (1890), now buried in Arlington National Cemetery. [
