Old black suitcase full of Cuvellier family papers and ephemera. Mention goes back to Charles Cuvellier in New Orleans, who owned several of the rare books in this sale, and appropriately noted in each lot. This group focuses on the circa 1900 direct descendants in Oakland, California. Included is a classic black strong box, the typical storage "safe" for family papers before modern local and regional public filing systems were developed. One of the Cuvelliers was at one time the editor of the Fernandina (Florida) Express. Included here is his business card and a copy of one of the papers. Gabriel Cuvellier was a Major in napoleon I's army, later a General in the Louisiana Legion. The family had another branch, with surname Soule, also famous in New Orleans, as a US Senator (Pierre Soule).
The latter Cuvillier here ran for councilman in Oakland, with several small broadsides present. This family invested in the Comanche mine in Mono County, according to documents contained here.
