Tables of the Value of Gold and Silver prepared by Thomas Price, Bullion Rooms, Assay Office, Chemical Laboratory and Ore Floors. San Francisco, California. Leary, printer, 1881, black leather, 7 x 10", 60pp. D. J. Lewis in gilt on cover. Lewis was an attorney, but in Esmeralda (Aurora) he acted as County Recorder, who was in charge of all mining claims, and later elected as District Attorney. The subsequent owner was G. L. Mordaunt. The tables show the value of gold at different finenesses based upon the fixed price of $20.671834625/oz. there are also tables fro silver in a similar manner, with silver at $1.29/oz. The term "standard silver" refers to 900 fine silver. This was the essential reference for all assayers and bankers. It is very rare to have a person's name pressed into the cover with gilt covering.
