This is a collection of correspondence, billheads, and letterhead related to the various business ventures of D.W. Bateman. David W. Bateman (1854-1932) was a Montana businessman involved in cattle ranching, wholesale liquor sales, and real estate during the late 19th and early 20th century. Bateman was the president of the Ashfield Land & Cattle Company, a cattle ranch near Bowdoin, Montana. This company mostly raised cattle and hay for sale, but it is possible that they also had other livestock and crops. Bateman did not work on the ranch himself but hired other men to conduct the day-to-day operations. Bateman worked in Great Falls where his liquor business was located. Bateman-Switzer Co. was a wholesale liquor dealer that also sold cigars, bar glassware, and carbonated beverages. Finally, Bateman was involved in the real estate industry. His real estate business was the Bateman-Wilkins Company. He bought and sold many different real estate properties including ranches, houses, restaurants, unimproved land, etc. There is plenty of correspondence between Bateman and his various business partners in this collection. There are also letters and billheads from other companies that Bateman bought supplies from for his ranch and liquor companies. Most of the billheads and letterheads in this collection are pictorial. This collection consists of 12 binders in 2 boxes (2 cubic feet). Please see our online catalog for more details. [Theresa Nielson]
