This is stock certificate #14 for 150 shares in 1892. It is a transfer from certificate #5. Sold to B. M. Hypes. (All told we know that Mr. Hypes had certificate number 2, 5, 7, 13, and 14. He must have been a major investor or original founder of the company.) No discernible issues: no rips, tears, discoloration, dog ears, pin holes, etc. Seal is stamped and not in foil like others we have offered for sale. Vignette of underground mining. The three most famous mines associated with the Dahlonega Gold Mining Company are the Horner, Briar Patch and Calhoun. The Calhoun mine is rather widely known as being the locality where gold was first discovered in the Dahlonega region and several very rich ore chutes have been worked here in the past down to water level. Some open cuts were made and shallow shafts sunk years ago on several small veins or chutes near together on lot 164 John C Calhoun, the noted South Carolina statesman, acquired possession of the property soon after the presence of gold had been discovered. When the Dahlonega Gold Mining & Milling Company purchased the famous Briar Patch Mine, they ran a ditch from Bull Shoal's Creek to the mine. This would make the Briar Patch a dividend payer! [Second Report on the Gold Deposits of Georgia by SP Jones Assistant State Geologist, 1909] Dr. Benjamin Murray Hypes was a founder of Marion Sims Medical College. He was also the president of the St. Louis Dental College in 1906.
