1) 98 cancelled shares @ $100 each of Dakota and Montana Railway Co. cert. #1 issued to William Wallace Jr on June 6, 1910 at Helena, MT. Assigned. Grey border with raised company seal. Vignette of eagle with wings raised with flag shield top center of certificate. Railroad in operation from 1879 - 1900. Successor was Winona & St Paul Rail Road. Printed: The Pioneer Press Mfg. Depts. St Paul. 2) Specimen $10,000 - 1st Mortgage Registered Bond Bearing 6% interest of Dakota Central Railway Co, Southeastern Division. Green border and company seal. Vignette of train on top center of certificate in station. 2 vignettes of children with flowers and straw on top sides of certificates. South Dakota Central Railway ran between Sioux Falls and Watertown. Organized and operated by local businessmen. Sioux Falls lawyer, Joe Kirby, served as the railroad's VP and attorney. Construction began in 1904. New towns created along the line included: Crooks, Colton, Huntimer, Chester, Nunda, Sinai, Lyons, Lake Norden, Ahnberg, Rutland, Badger, Thomas, Foley, and Hayti. Frederick Maytag invested in the railroad in 1904 about the same time he established the Maytag Co. which made washing machines. Railroad suffered chronic financial difficulties and went into receivership in 1908, sold in 1916 in accordance with a bankruptcy court order. Eventually came under the control of the Great Northern Railway.[ Maytag lost money on his railroad investment, and even reimbursed friends who invested in the venture on his advice.
