Forty-one (41) different dated counters, all with a US gold coin Liberty or Eagle obverse or reverse. This is a rather remarkable collection, almost impossible to replicate today. It does not, by any means, portend to be complete, but rather has duplicates from other areas of Fauver’s massive counter collection. 1810, 1814, 1842, 1847, 1849 (3 var), 1850, 1851, 1852, 1853, 1855, 1856, 1864, 1865, 1866, 1868 (2 var), 1873 (2 var), 1874, 1876, 1881, 1890, 1893, 1894, 1898, 1901, 1903, 1904, 1906, 1908, 1910, 1913, 1915, 1917, 1926, 1933, 1934, 1938, 1939. It is interesting to note the three different periods here where there are date groupings- a) the California gold rush years (1849-1856), b) the Civil War era (1864-1868), c) the c1900 mining boom years and the use of counters as jewelry (c1898-1917). Also of interest are the possible differing die sinkers. Are the pre-1820 pieces Kettle? Are the gold rush years made by Lauer or Allen & Moore, or yet another unknown die sinker?
