Spectacular and important. 640pp. 14 x 9" in custom slipcase. Choice condition with many illustrations. Originally written in Latin in 1556 by Georgius Agricola, widely considered the "father of mineralogy." First complete English translation, published in 1912 by The Mining Magazine in London. The translation was undertaken by Herbert Clark Hoover (future U.S. president, then a mining engineer) and his wife Lou Henry Hoover, a geologist and Latin scholar. It includes not just translation but also annotations, biographical introduction, and appendices that place Agricola's work into the broader development of mining, metallurgy, geology, mineralogy, and mining law. De Re Metallica (On the Nature of Metals) is the most important Renaissance text on mining and metallurgy. It covers mining methods, surveying, equipment, ore assaying, smelting, refining, mine law, and mineralogy as known in the mid-16th century. Agricola combined classical scholarship with direct observation in Saxon mining districts, producing the first systematic, scientific study of mining.
