Deadwood check on the account of lawyer Henry Frawley, issued to the Homestake Hotel in 1893. Reverse is signed by John A. Platt and stamped "For Deposit Account of P.A. Hearst." This refers to Phoebe Apperson Hearst, wife to major mining figure George Hearst, and mother to newspaper magnate William Randolph Hearst. The Homestake Hotel was a branch of the Hearst Mercantile Company in Lead, South Dakota. Blatt was a Black Hills pioneer who arrived in 1876 and ran the hotel. George Hearst died just two years prior to this check being issued.
