Original small booklet of Wells Fargo checks, 12" x 2 5/8" recovered from the Dement trunk found a the S.S. Central America shipwreck. This checkbook originally contained about 25 checks. The checks are pre-printed from the Wells Fargo & Co. Bankers office in San Francisco, datelined 185X. Seven checks were used, and the stubs are still present. Some of Dement's hand calculations are on the verso of the cover sheet. The first check was written to Knight and after that is illegible. Checks are thread sewn into the book. Second check is to Whitney & (illegible) written January 2, 1857. This shows that Dement was in San Francisco off and on over time. We now know from his new biography here that he made numerous trips via steamer to the East Coast to purchase goods for their Oregon City store. The third check is to Houshurst (?) Jan. 3, 1857. Fourth check is to Wingham & Kohn (?) Jan. 3, 1857. Fifth check is to W.C. Dement & Company, no date. The sixth and seventh check stubs are blank but the checks are removed from the book. Marbled paper boards. This appears to be a personal checkbook, not a company checkbook.
