July 5, 1857 letter datelined at Oregon City where John Dement lived. Oregon City was the center of Oregon and the terminus of the Oregon Trail, and the largest city in Oregon at the time, as well as headquarters for mining men venturing south into central Oregon gold regions. Four page letter discussing Jacksonville, the most important gold camp at the time. The writer appears to be making business propositions to Dement, and discussing getting drafts to him or Dement's wife if (John) is absent. The writer mentions Strickland at least twice, who may have been a stage driver out of Jacksonville, as the writer mentions Strickland moved from Jacksonville to Yreka, California, both important gold mining centers. In 1860, Peyton Strickland was a stage driver in Yreka, and remained so at least through 1870. This is an important gold rush letter from Oregon mentioning the key Oregon gold rush mining camp and Dement by name several times in the letter. More research necessary. Conserved by the Northeast Document Conservation Service in Andover. Recovered in 1991 from the SS Central America.
