Stock Certificate from the Denver & Santa Fe Railway Co. Stock. Incorporated in 1887 in State of Colorado. Certificate number 25 issued on October 8, 1889 to H. R. Woolcott. Signed by A. A. Robinson (2nd Vice President), and E. Mulder (?). Printed by The Denver Litho Co. Denver, Colo. Size 12 by 8 inches. In nice condition. Canceled. Nice vignette of train at the station, ornate border in light brown, cancelled with date stamp 8/12/96, handwritten note "#53 issued" and punch holes over signatures. Witness signature on reverse is Betts. Very good condition. Issued to Henry R. Wolcott, well known capitalist, prominent businessman, industrialist, and highly influential banking and mining interest in Colorado, New York and throughout the West. Wolcott managed the Boston and Colorado Smelting Works at Blackhawk, was given charge of the Alma plant and Argo plant, and became the treasurer of the Colorado Smelting and Mining Company. He was elected Director of the Equitable Life Assurance Society and instrumental in the construction of the Boston building and the Equitable building in Denver. Wolcott was Vice President of the First National Bank of Denver for over a decade, Vice President of the Colorado Fuel & Iron Company for several years and also President of the Colorado Telephone Company. He helped secure Fort Logan as a military post for Denver and was an organizer and charter member of the Denver Club, acting as President for many years. Wolcott was educated in Providence, Rhode Island and Cleveland, Ohio and earned a Masters of Arts Degree from both Yale University and Colorado College. Because of his generous contributions to public eduction the Wolcott Medal for Excellence in public reading was established for the young ladies of the East Denver High School. Gilpin county elected Wolcott Senator in 1878 at the same time his brother, Edward Oliver Wolcott, was representing Clear Creek county in the General Assembly. Henry R. Wolcott was elected President Pro Tern and during his term served as acting governor of Colorado. Wolcott was a member of the Union League, University Clubs of NY, the Racquet and Tennis, Brook, Lambs, New York Yacht and Larchmont Yacht Clubs of New York; the Atlantic Yacht, the Manhasset, the Tavern Clubs of Boston; the Metropolitan Club of Washington; and the Denver and University Clubs of Denver.
