Handwritten letter on Department of Justice letterhead, Jan. 30, 1873, to Attorney General Geo. H. Williams from Aaron A. Sargent. Message details Sargent's recommendation of John M. Coghlan for a vacancy in the Utah Leadership cause by the resignation of Strickland. Signed "A.A. Sargent." Folds, toning, rips. Sargent was a journalist, lawyer, politician and diplomat. He moved to Nevada City during the Gold Rush, working for the Nevada Daily Journal before becoming district attorney for Nevada County in 1856. He served as a member of Congress and later as US Senator. In 1878, Sargent historically introduced what would later become the 19th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, giving women the right to vote. He was sometimes called the "Senator for the Southern Pacific Railroad"; in 1861, he authored the first Pacific Railroad Act.
