2 Cancelled Des Chutes Railroad Co. stock with grey border and gold seal and train vignette on top left of certificate. Inc. OR. 1) 997 cancelled shares of Des Chutes Railroad Co. cert. # 1 issued to J. P. O'Brien on Feb 24, 1906. 2) 996 shares of Des Chutes Railroad Co. cert # 6 issued to Union Pacific Railway Co. on Jan 25, 1910. In 1908, construction of 2 competing railroads was begun at meeting of the Deschutes and Columbia Rivers. Oregon Trunk Railroad was to connect with the Union Pacific on the south bank of the Columbia River, while the Deschutes Railroad was to connect with the Spokane, Portland & Seattle Railroad, located on the north bank of the Columbia River. Both sides were competing for the same ground and railroad war erupted that included deaths. By 1935 both railroads had abandoned some areas and they use some of the same tracks and shared expenses. Today, the Deschutes Railroad and Oregon Trunk names are no longer used. Line is jointly operated by Union Pacific and Burlington Northern Sante Fe. Line is owned by and maintained by both companies.
