Desert Near Palm Springs, oil on masonite, by Kathi Hilton. Masonite is 24 x 20 inches, frame is 30-1/2 x 26-1/2 inches. The artist's signature is in the lower right. This comes from the collection of Robert “Doc” Smeton, longtime resident of Twentynine Palms, California, and a close friend of artist John W. Hilton and his daughter Kathi. As a family of artists, both Hiltons made extensive use of the palette knife and shared a fondness for soft, pink skies. John W. Hilton's daughter, Kathi, was born in a doctor's office in Mecca in 1939. She grew up in the surroundings of a gem and art shop with chuckwallas, rocks, and minerals. She enrolled in the Desert Sun School, a bohemian experience in Idyllwild, then went to a private school, and attended UCLA. Despite her father's initial discouragement, Kathi eventually became a painter herself in Twentynine Palms with her first show at the Twentynine Palms Gallery in 1970. John W. Hilton, then already well known as "The Man Who Invented Sunshine" started to appear with her in father-daughter shows. Before long, Kathi was able to step out from his shadow, and by 1978, Desert Magazine wrote, "Kathi creates a luminosity of her own."
