1/2 x 1/2 x 1" Sawed specimen of high grade gold-bearing quartz veinlet. Nice specimen with visible native gold. The Dexter mine is in the Tuscarora district 52 miles northeast of Elko, Nevada. The Dexter mine consists of stockwork gold-silver bearing quartz veins cutting andesite and tuff. Placer gold was discovered in 1867, silver production followed in 1871, declining in 1881 but recovering later, including the Dexter mine which produced from 1897 to 1904. Fischer-Watt Gold Mining Company acquired, explored and developed the Dexter Mine mine and began production from an open pit mine in 1987. The announced reserves at that time were 2.0 million tons of ore grading 0.039 ounces gold and 1.9 ounces silver per ton. The mine remained active until 1989.
