By C. Niles Haskell. “Containing the City Record, the Names of All the Citizens, a Business Directory, and an Almanac.” The town of Newburyport became a city in 1851 (four years before this directory). Situated near the mouth of the Merrimack River, it was a fishing, shipbuilding and shipping center, with an industry in silverware manufacture. The captains of old Newburyport (as elsewhere in Massachusetts) had participated vigorously in the triangular trade, importing West Indian molasses and exporting rum made from it. The distilleries were located around Market Square near the waterfront. Caldwell's Old Newburyport rum was manufactured locally until well into the 19th-century. Merrimack Arms and Brown Manufacturing Company made Southerner Derringer pistols in their Newburyport factory here. Hardcover with nice designs. Green advertising pages on front and back. Over 50 pages of advertising! Includes a table of contents (business directory, custom house, societies, mills, Newbury railroad, banks, etc.) Foxing throughout. One advertising page has an oval cut out. Very nice condition overall! 184 pages. [Rarity: i]City: NewburyportCounty: State: MADate:
