A collection of 26 postcards depicting the earthquake, June 29, 1925, in Santa Barbara, Ca. All RPCs and unused. Complete set of duplicates with 13 different postcards showing various views of the disastrous aftermath.
At 6:44 a.m., Monday, June 29, 1925, an earthquake hit the area of Santa Barbara, Ca. It only lasted 19 seconds but it resulted in 13 casualties and an estimated $8 million damage (about $111 million in 2017). It had a magnitude between 6.5 and 6.8 and a maximum Mercalli Intensity of IX (Violent). It destroyed the historic center of the city. Though 13 people died, it may have been far worse without the actions of three heroes, who shut off the town gas and electricity preventing a catastrophic fire. Most homes survived the earthquake, although nearly every chimney in the city crumbled. [] [California] [] [] []
