San Francisco in 1863, Taken from Russian Hill. This was not in the Clifford Collection and is an unlisted variant in Baird. Baird lists "San Francisco in 1861 (taken from Russian Hill). The 1863 illustration is very similar with new buildings in the foreground and churches in the city. The artist's names (T. Armstrong and Victor Hoffman, are no longer visible. There seems to be more closely related to an 1869 version of this lettersheet that is listed in Baird. Double truck letter sheet with an printed etching of San Francisco from Russian Hillat the top. 4-page letter is framed two-sided for reading. (14.75" x 20.25") The letter is from John Cadline of Watsonville, Cal. He writes to his brother while he is vacationing in San Francisco about wanting to stay in California for the climate and productiveness, and he does not intend to move back to Iowa even if he was offered the whole state! He describes the scene in the etching to his brother as looking toward the Bay.
