This document written by William Henry Ashley, Lieutenant Governor of Missouri in 1824 gives notice to an appointed Sheriff of Cooper County. The great Seal of Missouri is embossed in the lower left corner. The document is 10 in. X 16 in, perfectly legible; a professionally repaired edge on the right side. Dated at April 26th, 1824 in St. Charles. Ashley's signature is clear and bold lower right. Ashley is best remembered as co-owner of the Rocky Mountain Fur Company which employed Jedediah Smith, the first white man to cross the current state of Nevada; and also Jim Bridger who would later own the RMFC in 1830. The fur trade and their mountain men pioneered the west for pilgrims, traders, farmers, and later the railroads.
