Texas pioneer and later Texas Ranger William Jeff Maltby was made commander of Company E in 1874. This document is signed by him on September 22rd, 1874 while in command of Co. E, Frontier Battalion. It is important to note that Maltby was court marshalled after the Civil War and later signed an oath of loyalty to the Union. This may have been nothing more that a formality at the time. He participated in many cattle drives between Texas and Kansas as a rancher. The second Texas document is a writ of habeas corpus for two Chinamen for violating local law of inhabiting an opium den signed by Judge T.A. Falvey of El Paso, Texas.
