A salesman sample from the Donaldson Lithograph Company displaying an advertisement design to be sold to Bock beer manufacturers. The sample is a large muslin wall hanger featuring the imposing head of a horned billy goat -- an animal traditionally associated with Bock beer -- and bold text reading 'DONALDSON' and 'BOCK'. A price chart in the bottom right corner of the design lists prices for different sizes and quantities of banner and advertises the durability of muslin. The design is labelled 'BOCK BANNER No. 2478'.
Donaldson Lithograph, founded in 1863 and officially incorporated in 1883, manufactured designs on paper, muslin, metal, and glass, producing thousands of designs until its final closure in 1981. It most famously produced advertisements for circuses, animal shows, and wild west shows. The company was involved in a significant court case, Bleistein v. Donaldson Lithographing Co., in which the Supreme Court ruled that advertisements are protected by copyright.
The wall hanger is heavily wrinkled, with some wear/paint loss along these creases. It will need to be stretched out for display.
