Perhaps the most famous aerial combat mission of all time, the Doolittle Raiders have gone down in history all America's bravest heros. It was Jimmy Doolittle famous air rad against Japan that marked the beginning of the turnaround toward victory for America and her allies in WWII, and restored hope to the world after the infamous and tragic surprise Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941. This photo was taken on April 10th, 1942 on the USS Hornet prior to the mission and shows: Jimmy Doolittle on the left standing in front a group of "Raiders, and Captain Mitscher on the right. In the background is a B-25 plane, one of 16 Navy Task Force Lead, James H. Doolittle and his hand-picked crew would launch off the USS Hornet carrier about 450 miles off the coast of Japan to attack 5 major Japanese cities and surrounding military targets. The mission was an overwhelming success and all planes but one hit their targets, but not one B-25 returned safely home. 64 Raiders made it to Chungking, thanks to the aid of Chinese peasants, many of whom were killed for their heroism, while others were captured and held as POWs, injured critically or killed. This photograph is one of the most famous pictures of American heroism, courage and sacrifice ever captured and is signed by three of the original surviving Raiders, Ed Horton, Richard Cole and Bill Bower. Since the signing of this photo, all three WWII veterans passed away. Their stories and obituraries are included with this lot, as well as a Certificate of Authenticity from Nostalgic Aviation. Truly an Iconic and irreplacable piece of American History. City: State: Date:
