Dr. Mattsonís Elastic Injection Instrument in 9 sections. Patented April 4, 1854 on the instrument. This instrument would have been used for enemas. Bag section 5x2î, other sections about 1-9î. As per Richmond News Leader advertisement on page 3, July, 16 1856-Dr. Mattsonís Improved Elastic Enema, the most convenient, simple and elegant instrument ever used. For sale at Meade and Bakerís New Apothecary Store, 186 NW Cor. Main and 10th., Richmond, VA. The printed instructions were found with this piece. The instruction sheet is about 8.5 x 11.5î in vertical format. It is fully intact, and a showy, diagrammatic instruction sheet, sold by Matson & Co. of Boston with a date of 1855 noted at the bottom. It is called a ìself-syringeî and may be operated by one hand. It is a womanís douche.This instrument and its instructions were found in the Easton Trunk, recovered in 1990 from the portside debris field.
