c. 1910s. Rare Pershing County ghost town. Polk never canvassed Rochester. Not mentioned in Shamberger's Rochester volume. No mentions found on newspapers.com. In 1917, there were 9 saloons still in Rochester, but they are listed by proprietor. This is one of the great Nevada rarities from a very historic Nevada mining camp in western Nevada near Lovelock, now gone off the earth, part of a major open pit gold-silver mine. Rochester was reportedly discovered in the early 1860's by a man from Rochester, New York, though there is little, if any, paper record extant, inclusive of mining stock certificates. It became a boom town in 1909 after the Tonopah-Goldfield discoveries of c 1900, and is a hot spot of production today. The mine is operated by Couer, and has been in near-continuous operation since 1986. Today, they produce about 50,000 ounces of gold per year and millions of ounces of silver. The 2017 reserves were listed as 758,000 oz gold and 117m oz silver. Pop in 1990: 1.
