Very Rare c. 1859 assay report trio from E. Justh of San Francisco, formerly of Justh and Hunter of SS Central America ingot fame. All 3 are signed by assayer Sidney Van Wyck who later went to Aurora in the early 1860's with known ingots. Importantly, each of these bullion deposits from Sept. to Oct. 1859 made by CTH Palmer of the Folsom Wells Fargo & Co. office contained iridium. This indicates the source may have been Northern California where gold placers cut through ultramafic sequences, such as serpentine, in areas such as Del Norte, Shasta and Trinity counties. While the gold content is very high, 900-922 fine, there is a note on the Oct. 4, 1859 deposit "cannot sell at any price". They were unable to remove the iridium, thus rendering the ingots unsellable. Over time, they did figure out how to remove the iridium. San Francisco California Franklin Collection
