E. Lewin & Co Assay Office Receipt, Shasta, CA, March 4, 1869 - Memorandum of Gold Bullion deposited with E. Lewin & Co., by C.C. Bush, Merchants and Bankers. Bush gave Lewin bullion bar #3122, weighing 23.51 ounces before melting and 22.55 ounces after melting, gold fineness 888, valued at $413.94. The net value was $611.93. Lewin ran some of the first assays on Comstock ore (Blake, 1860). An advertisement for Lewin & Co. in Langley's Pacific Coast Business Directory for 1867, (p. 96 rear) lists F. Baehr as a partner. C.C. Bush later ran the Bank of Shasta County at Redding. Shasta was the central gold rush community for the northern gold mines. Located north of Redding in central California, the community was the focal point for gold mines in Trinity, Klamath, Shasta, Siskiyou, and other neighboring counties. At one time it was considered for the state capital and was also under consideration for the transcontinental railroad route. Very rare. Very fine. Size: 9.75 x 4 inches.
