Rare. Inc. in New York. No. 168, issued to Oscar Chase for 1,000 shares on July 9th, 1880 in New York. Signed by president James Wadsworth and the secretary. Not cancelled. Nice design with ornate black border and print, orange background and three vignettes: eagle (top center), and two different mining scenes (at left and right). Printed by CM Cornwell, NY. Pinhole, folds, clean. 6.75 x 9.75" According to E&MJ, Vol. 31 (1881), the company operated the Little Hope Claim on the eastern slope of Battle Mountain in the Eagle River Mining District. They had a 265 ft. tunnel "which is looking well." The article describes the district as being located near Red Cliff. Later, the mining town camp of Gilman was formed to better exploit Battle Mountain's resources. The district was first in Summit County but later became part of Eagle County when it formed. Henderson says that Eagle County encompasses both the Holy Cross and Eagle River mining districts. This company is not listed in C&L (1883). Burchard discusses the district but does not mention this specific company.
