In 1994, the surviving members of the Eagle Squadrons of the Royal Air Force (RAF) gathered to sign copies of a fine-art print by John Shaw commemorating their service in WWII at a ceremony attended by the consignor of this lot, a long-time friend of John Shaw's brother. The three Eagle Squadrons of the RAF were formed in the early days of WWII and manned with pilot volunteers from the United States prior to America's entry into the war in December 1941. Eagle Squadron 71 was formed in September 1940 as part of the RAF's buildup during the Battle of Britain and became operational for defensive duties on 5 February 1941. Squadron 121 was formed at RAF Kirton-in-Lindsey in May 1941, and Squadron 133 was formed at RAF Coltishall in July 1941. This is number 50 of 750, beautifully triple-matted and framed. Frame is 32"w x 35"h.
