These two historical pieces are beautifully framed. 1) Cover from Salt Lake City addressed to Honorable John S Child / Judge of Probate / Carson Valley / U. T. Manuscript cancel with 'OFFICIAL' also in manuscript. 2) Official appointment by Utah Territorial Governor Alfred Cummings for John S Childs as Probate Judge on August 18, 1858. The earliest history of settlers in Nevada revolve around the Mormons and their expansion throughout their territory which included present day Nevada. However, their practice of polygamy brought them into conflict with the United States Government. In 1857 Governor Brigham Young recalled all Mormons to Salt Lake City to prepare for war with the United States. That meant any form of government currently in western Utah Territory was gone. With the advent of gold and silver, undesirable types started trickling in. After one particularly bad man was hung by the citizens of Carson Valley (Genoa), the good citizens met at Childs Store and petitioned the Salt Lake Government to appoint some form of government. 1) The 16 x 8.5" blue document is dated August 18, 1858 and commissions Childs as Probate Judge. 2) The cover is from April 14, but with no year (probably 1859). This commission did not really help matters. The miners looked at Childs as a Mormon appointee and did not trust him. Childs tried twice to hold elections. The first was boycotted by much of the territory. The second was really a mute point as President Lincoln would soon after create the Territory of Nevada. Still, Childs did hold meetings that were recorded giving us an early look at Nevada before it was Nevada. (Lost of background on Childs and the order of law in this time period.)
