Civilian purchase item, as evidenced by the stamped design on the flap. One of the original roller buckles still attached to a portion of the adjustable strap, which has become detached but still remains in the bag, indicates mid-19th century origin. Numerous repairs, including repairing the damage when the brass button for the flap’s securing strap became detached, indicates very hard use. This was likely a civilian “possibles” bag, which would have held ammunition for a black-powder firearm, and due to its size may also have contained additional personal items. This may also be another souvenir captured during the Indian Wars period. From the Dick Reyes Collection, Carson City. It is unknown if this was one of his original Custer items.
