2. The Small Hopes Consolidated Mining Company stock certificate A3357, incorporated in New York. Issued to Theo C. Camp(?) for 100 shares on June 7, 1897 in New York. Issued in payment for property situated in Lake County, State of Colorado. Signed by R.C.Kevens(?) (president). 28.3x19cm. Green on white. Dividend stamps inked on front, adhesive dividend stamps on reverse.

From Corbett (1879, p.283): Small Hope Mining Pool, W.H. Williams, M.D., M.H. Slater, J.F. Sanders, W.S. Williams, and others; offices, Leadville and Denver, Colorado; the mins owned by this company are the Ranchero, Robert Emmet, Forest City and Result, situated one mile from Leadville, in Stray Horse gulch.

Prospectus: Leadville Leader MC Prospectus, incorporated CO 1915. W.H. Covey and president and GM. A 4 page prospectus with two illustrations of the buildings and mine site. The prospectus states that there are three shafts, down 225', 220', and 500'. There is approximately 100,000 tone of mill ore which should average $8.00 per ton. The property is located in the center of the Leadville post office. Enclosed with the prospectus is a form letter from A.R. Bickerstaff, exclusive agent recommending purchase of stocks at $100 per share. 8.5x11". Slight tears at margin where folded.

The first gold mining boom occurred in 1860, bringing approximately 10,000 miners to the area. The second boom began in 1878 with the discovery of extensive silver deposits. By 1880, the population was estimated to be between 25,000 and 40,000.
