An early mechanical equatorial sundial. This is the first of three beautiful, important antique time pieces. This piece is brass, 77mm in diameter. No maker name apparent. probably Italian. Shows many of the Italian cities in Latin around the perimeter, Palermo 30, Lisabon 39, Neaplis Neis 40, Bersalon 41, Rom Adrianopel 42. The inner circle on this side has two sets of 12 each, for a total of 24 hrs. ; also, on the other side, Venedig 45, Inspnuk 46, Augsburg Paris 4x Cracau Prag 50, Leipzig Colln 51, Constanlinopel 43, Lion. The inner ring has Amsterdam, London, etc. These were used to tell time before the clock was invented. This piece may date to the 1600's.
