Documents from an 1843 trial for rape, described at the time as bastardry, in Harrison County, Ohio. Mary Morgan, an unmarried woman, accused fellow Harrison County citizen Jacob Fisher of leaving her pregnant with a child that, if born alive, would be a bastard. After Morgan attempted to sue him, Fisher refused to comply to the court's order to appear and was fined for failing to answer the charge. He was jailed twice over the course of the case for failing to pay the resulting fines. While an 1844 note claims that Morgan was eventually paid in full, the note may have been the result of coercion.
