July 16, 1857 letter datelined Wilson (Niagara County, NY) and addressed to Mr. Easton. Three page letter conserved at the Ohio State University Libraries. Significant portions of the letter are missing, but the general nature of the correspondence of the first page is present. The writer tells Easton he is in trouble and asks his advice. My (FH) interpretation is that this is a close friend or family member who has aging parents who moved into a house they cannot afford. He appears to be asking for $600 or $700. Wilson is located on the shore of Lake Ontario only 25 miles from Niagara Falls. In 1850 the population was 2,955 and double that 110 years later after WW2. It might be supposed that for Easton to have carried this letter which may have arrived about the time of his departure from San Francisco, that he may have intended to act on it, or at the very least write the person while he was in New York before departing for their Paris honeymoon. Much to learn here, particularly if parts of the rest of the letter can be interpreted.
