Born in 1917, Edward "Ed' Dobrotka was a lesser-known founding member of the American comics industry. After graduating from the Cleveland School of Art, Dobrotka would become an early assistant of Joe Shuster, co-creator of Superman. Dobrotka inked numerous sketches for him as well as other industry icons like John Sikela, Leo Nowak, and Wayne Boring; during his tenure in the comics industry, he would ink lines for foundational series such as Superman, Superboy, and Lois Lane. The 30s and 40s were known as the Golden Age of comics for good reason: the characters and stories invented during this period have continued to inspire and entertain audiences for nearly a century, leaving a profound impact on American culture. Through his early work on Superman, Dobrotka participated in the creation of an American icon, forever leaving his mark not just on the history of comics, but of the nation.

A phenomenally talented artist in his own right, Dobrotka also had an impressive body of work outside the comic medium. He sketched, inked, and painted numerous illustrations of people, the natural landscape, and intricate architecture, the latter of which he had a particular skill for. This talent would earn him the attention of the United States army, which hired him as a graphic artist at the USAF's Air University and later commissioned him to create paintings for their Recruiting Publicity Center in the early 60s. His landscape and urban scene paintings have also gained acclaim, selling at auction and prompting retrospectives from the art world.

The Edward Dobrotka collection contains over a hundred items from Dobrotka, containing dozens of original works in pencil and watercolor. The jewel of the collection is a ten-page series of original sketches for a Superman comic in which a young Clark Kent wreaks havoc on the city of London. These sketches are likely from the early 40s, as Dobrotka pivoted to exclusively doing ink work for comics in 1945. The collection also contains pieces of his work for and correspondence with the U.S. Army Recruiting Publicity Center, his landscape watercolors, his architectural illustrations, and several paintings of ice skaters. - JRM
