Striking vignette of an electric street candle. Made from adamantine, wax and coach. Printer was Forbes Co. of Boston. VERY EARLY #5 for 100 shares to Horace K Thurber. Signed by president Thurber and secretary John R Bostwick. Dateline New York 1883. Incorporated November 17, 1882. Located on the Hudson River. One 1/4" rip at vertical fold. Otherwise a magnificent cert. News of the company seems to disappear after 1883. If you ever thought of visiting this shop in 1883 (the year of our certificate) I wouldn't. The New York Times reported that at night,13th Avenue, was an unsafe place that even the police avoided. A known hangout for 19th-century hoodlums, bars in the area were notorious for brawls, cockfights, and fires, which damaged several large businesses like the Electric Candle Company. By the way, 13th Avenue is the shortest New York Numbered street. Who knew? Prag Collection City: State: Date: 1883 HWAC# 81671
