#24 for 90 shares to Frances B Thurber Signed by John R Bostwik and president HK Thurber. Great vignette of the candle at work underground (with sailing ship in background?). Manufactured at the corner of 14th Street and13th Avenue. Printer was Forbes Co. of Boston. Heavy folds with small rip and tear. News of the company seems to disappear after 1883. If you ever thought of visiting this shop in 1883 (the year of our certificate) I wouldn't. The New York Times reported that at night,13th Avenue, was an unsafe place that even the police avoided. A known hangout for 19th-century hoodlums, bars in the area were notorious for brawls, cockfights, and fires, which damaged several large businesses like the Electric Candle Company. (W.D.
