Letterpress book containing outgoing correspondence dated 1880-85, from the financial records of Henry Elling, a banker in Virginia City, Montana, with extensive mercantile, mining, and ranching interests. According to information inside the book, the business, Elling & Knight, was formed in late 1880, and this was one of the business' first books. Elling was a German immigrant who moved to Virginia City in 1864. He became a prosperous banker, and by the 1870s, was well established as one of the wealthiest men in state. He and his wife Mary had 10 children, seven of whom survived to adulthood. They built their house - a mansion - in 1876.
