An important discovery of a handful of original photos from the Ely Cosmographic Society, c1925-1928, which had about 6 members including Nevada Senator Key Pitman, David Miles, J.F. Miles and others. This archive is from the Miles family. The Society was formed to study and protect Indian village sites, caves and petroglyphs. "We will pay no attention to political questions", said David Miles in a 1928 news article published in Reno. The men put their money, minds and backs into the scientific exploration and identification of various sites. Perhaps the most famous of their finds was a group of triangular resservoirs possibly used for irrigation in Spring Valley, eastern Nevada thought to be 50,000 years old. They collaborated with the Smithsonian Institution to have the SI investigate the caves immediately above the reservoir sites. This cosmographic society appears to have been one of the few in the United States, with the oldest belonging to the Cosmographic Society of Nuremburg, formed in 1740. This group contains twelve bound volumes, mostly the Bureau of Ethnicity. The following are all signed/inscribed by Key Pitman: 1) Ethnology of the Tewa Indians, 1914; 2) Recent disscoveries attributed to early man, 1918; 3) Maya Indians, 1918; 4) 13th Annula Report for 1908-9, 1915, Guiana Indians; 5) 32nd Annula Report..., for 1910-11, 1918, Seneca Fiction- Legends and myths; 6) 33rd Annual report..for 1911-12, 1919, La Plata River Region; 7) 35th... for 1913-14, 1921, 2 vols, Ethnicity of Kwakiuth. The following are NOT signed by Key Pitman: Phisiography of the Rio Grande Valley, 1913; Antiquities of Mesa Verde, 1911; 31st Annoual Report... for 1909-10, 1916, Tsimshian Indians Mythology; USGS Contributions to North American Ethnology, v5, 1882; USGS 7th Annul Report, 1888, Obsidian Cliff, Yellowstone.
