Here is a chance to own a very early uncancelled Adolph Sutro signature on a rarer stock certificate. # 43 for 10 shares to William Milliken. Signed by William Borniman and president Adolph Sutro. Dateline Dayton, Nevada 1863. Located in the rare Badger Mining District. Incorporated February 5, 1863. Not cancelled. Two vignettes at left -- one of a ship and the second of an eagle -- a small dog and safe vignette at bottom, and a 25ct. revenue stamp affixed at right. Uncancelled. Printer-Enterprise Print. Small fold bottom left corner. Light stain where revenue stamp (it seems) bled through from the reverse. The 1863 Kelly Nevada Directory lists Milliken as a mining man bedding at the Roberts Hotel. A. Sutro Company is listed as bankers and assayers. Both in Dayton. The Emma is not listed in Collins Nevada Directory of 1864. The Badger Mining District was eventually combined with many others to form the Silver City Mining District. The Badger was located near the Sutro Tunnel. Apparently, the Company consolidated the San Francisco Company - Neighbor Ledge, the Great Western Company - Great Western Ledge, the Murphy Company - Ball Ledge, and the Kinkead Company - Snow Ledge, into one. Fred Holabird says, "The Emma was a prospect named after Sutro's daughter. It was near the Sutro Tunnel entrance, located up in the hills near the #1 shaft for the Tunnel." Emma Sutrio Merritt would become a rare early San Francisco female doctor. Bios on Adolph and Emma Sutro. City:Sutro, Lyon Co. State:Nevada Date:1863
