White Pine District, Nevada. Wow! Inc. in Pennsylvania, 1867. Low number 11, issued for 500 shares to Charles Silver on January 16th, 1868 in Philadelphia. Signed by president HH Fitzgerald, secretary Silver, and the treasurer. Not cancelled. Black border and print. Fantastic vignette showing the inside of a stamp mill! Printed by Wm. Mann, Philadelphia. Pinholes, folds, toning. 6.25 x 10.5" This company is a mystery to us. These pieces are very rare, and the few (one) we have sold before we have never been able to firmly locate. No articles found on CDNC or newspapers.com. A key here is the tie to a gem mining company, and this may be the first gem company in Nevada at the height of the 1860's silver boom in Nevada. The question is "what gem were they after?" Was it turquoise? amethyst? The exact location is a mystery still. There was an Empire Mine on the Comstock and in White Pine County. There was also a Gem Mine in White Pine County (Raymond,1870). The fact that the Empire was a producer in the White Pine District in 1868 as reported by Raymond in 1869 (p98), leads us to believe that the Gem was a mining claim adjacent to the Empire. Were there any gems associated with it? we may never know. We believe the data points to this being a White Pine County piece. City: State: Nevada Date: 1868
