Lot of three 100 gram silver ingots hallmarked Engelhard London with British assay stamps. Each bar is 3.21 troy ounces. 'EI' is the refiner's mark [Engelhard International]. The leopard's head is the London Assay Office hallmark. The seated Britannia traditionally indicates Britannia silver [.958], but in this case .999. The 'U' indicates 1969. Complete sets for $79.95 and individual ingots for $22.95 were originally advertised in the October 25, 1969 edition of The Saturday Review. These sets were not produced in subsequent years, as originally intended. It is believed far fewer sets were produced than the advertised 25,000 estimate.
The practice of hallmark began in 1300, when King Edward II of England required all silver items produced or sold to be tested for purity and then marked with the Crowned Leopard's Head. This was known as the King's Mark at the time.
