999 Silver Medallion commemorating Operation Jonathan at Uganda Airport in 1976. Obv: hand holding up a dove with an olive branch in its beak, another hand holding a sword, and a military aircraft. Around the inside of the edge is // PEACE THROUGH STRENGTH / ENTEBBE-JULY 4,1976 //. Rev: // JULY 4, / 1976 / OPERATION / JONATHAN / ENTEBBE, / UGANDA / .999 FINE SILVER // surrounded by a laurel wreath. Hijackers from the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine and the German Revolutionary Cells (RZ) commandeered the flight and flew to Uganda, where they were welcomed by Ugandan dictator Idi Amin. 106 Israeli and other Jewish passengers were segregated and held as hostages. Other passengers were released and flown to Paris. Israeli security forces mounted a rescue operation, killing all the hijackers, 45 Ugandan soldiers, and destroying 11 Ugandan MIG fighter aircraft. 103 of the hostages were rescued. Because Israel received support from Kenyan forces, Idi Amin ordered the killing of all Kenyan-Ugandans in Uganda. 245 died and some 3,000 fled the country. The only Israeli military fatality was Yonathon Netanyahu (for whom the operation was posthumously named), the older brother of Benjamin Netanyahu, who would become Israeli prime minister years later.
