Very rare. Dateline Safford, Arizona, Feb. 26th, 1896. Issued for 2 shares to CD Ely. Signed by president NP Beebe and secretary Harry Warren. Not cancelled. Brown red print on green paper with vignette of eagle with American flag. Folds, archival tape repaired separations. 5.25 x 11" The organizers of this company, including rancher Nelson P. Beebe, wanted to build a canal that would take river water from existing canals in the Upper Gila River at a point 9 miles up the river from Solomon to near Pima. They thought this would also increase the amount of irrigated land in the valley by 60,000 acres. Survey work became an issue when ranchers in the area were killed by Apaches led by Geronimo. By July 1898, 15 miles of the canal had been "laid out." In 1898-99, work started an a mile of the canal was completed. However, that's where the project stopped because the other canal companies did not join the project.
