Enterprise Gold and Silver Mining Company stock certificate No. 173, incorporated July 13, 1866 in California. Meadow Lake District. Issued to J. Battersly for 3 shares ($250 per share) on December 12, 1866. Signed by H. DeLand (president) and J. DeBell (secretary). Black border on white. 6x10". Revenue sticker on left. Vignette of underground scene of mine, mine name inscribed on ore car unique to site. Extremely fine. This is the first certificate we have seen from the discover period in this area.

Very famous mining district in the Sierras near Truckee. The area was made famous by the gold rush there in 1863-6 after the Comstock, only to see it fail. Sam Clemens' brother Orion went there in 1866 for naught. Famous Gold Hill journalist Alf Doten bought this stock also. (Ref: Doten Journal v2 p1152 and others).
