Extremely rare, important, and very early Gold Rush certificate. "Located upon Kentucky Ridge, Nevada Co., Cal." (printed in text of stock). Gold was discovered at Kentucky Ridge in October 1851. The Kentucky Ridge Mine was operated by Colonel William F. English who brought 40 slaves from Florida and South Carolina to work the mine. From 1851-1852, the Kentucky Ridge Mine was the largest enterprise in California operated by slave labor. This certificate is No. 57, issued to company president E.W. Roberts on November 21st, 1851 in Nevada (City), Cal. Signed by Roberts and secretary Andrew. Reverse has pen transfer to AD Roberts in 1853. Small certificate (3.5 x 8") printed by Nevada Journal Print. Ornate border, no vignette. Light wear. EW Roberts was an attorney in Nevada County. He is perhaps related to George Roberts, a lumberman who discovered gold in 1850 at the site of what would become the famous Empire Mine. We could find no mentions of the Enterprise Quartz Company in newspaper databases. E.W. Roberts is mentioned in Bean's 1867 work on Nevada County, and even authors an article in the work about Rough and Ready. It is also mentioned that in 1855, he worked the Osceola Ledge at Rough and Ready.
