Rare. Report of the Citizens' Health Committee and An Account of Its Work. CA Murdock & Co., San Francisco. 313pp. Hardcover. 8.5 x 6.5" The report offers a detailed account of San Francisco's efforts to eradicate bubonic plague, especially during and after the 1907-1908 outbreaks, following the earlier epidemic of 1900-1904. It includes measures taken, such as rat extermination campaigns, sanitation ordinances, and public health procedures. These interventions were pivotal in San Francisco's public health response to plague. It also contains facsimiles of public circulars, ordinances supporting sanitation, and an extensive list of subscribers to the health fund supporting these efforts. The 1900-1904 plague was North America's first major outbreak, centered in San Francisco's Chinatown. There were 121 confirmed cases and 119 deaths. In contrast, the 1907-1908 outbreak prompted swift action: public health authorities targeted rats as disease vectors and implemented aggressive rat control and sanitation measures across the city. These efforts significantly reduced cases and fatalities and represented a more coordinated public health approach.
