So Called Dollar HK #1, in White metal, encased in a wooden box "made out of a piece of wood brought from Erie on the first canal boat The Seneca Chief." The completion of the Erie Canal in 1826 was a momentous feat in American History, as the 363 mile waterway opened the West and made New York City the greatest harbor in the world. Nicknamed "Clinton's Folly" after the governor of New York, the canal was wildly successful and paid for itself in a short period of time. Listed as extremely rare in Hibler/Kappen's "So Called Dollars" this example in the original box must be unique.
