Ernest Lisle Reedstrom (1928-2003) was an artist, writer, and historian whose work focused primarily on the history of the Old West. As a historian and author, he wrote several books about the American West including Apache Wars: An Illustrated Battle History, Historic Dress of the Old West, Bugles, Banners, and War Bonnets, Custer’s 7th Cavalry: From Fort Riley to the Little Bighorn, Authentic Costumes & Characters of the Wild West, and more. He was considered by many to be an expert in US Cavalry history between 1866 and 1876. Some of his other research focused on famous outlaws like Jesse James and John Dillinger. As an artist, Reedstrom was known for his paintings and drawings of the Old West. He created hand-drawn illustrations for his own books and those of other authors. He is also known for his oil paintings of the Old West, most notably, an oil painting of Custer’s Last Stand titled “Custer’s Last Campaign.” The Ernest L. Reedstrom Archive consists of 7 boxes (7 cubic feet) of materials related to Reedstrom’s career as a historian and author. These materials include manuscripts and drafts of book chapters and other articles written by Reedstrom. Most of these drafts have handwritten annotations and corrections on them. This archive also includes Reedstrom’s correspondence with historical societies, libraries, museums, etc. related to his research. There is also correspondence from several publishing companies. Other items in this collection include research materials like photographs, photocopies of primary sources, newspaper clippings, etc. The most interesting pieces in this collection are original illustrations done by Reedstrom for his book. These drawings are mostly of US Cavalry soldiers, cowboys, Indians, etc. There are other pieces related to Reedstrom’s artistic career including postcard reproductions of his oil paintings. Overall, this is a great collection of personal papers from an author and artist who was well versed in many aspects of Western American history. The following paragraphs contain brief summaries of the highlights of each box, but a detailed inventory is available in our online catalog.
